A good day at the Area Golf Tournament

A good day at the Area Golf Tournament
You would have to dig into the archives to find a time when the Tattnall golf team was "in the mix" to make it to the State Tournament. Tattnall golf has captured 8 Region titles going back to 1989 and one state championship in 2001.

The Area Tournament took place Monday at the River Forest Golf Club in Forsyth, GA, and is a very firm and difficult course. "Missing in the correct spots, knowing when to attack pins, and shot placement proved to be pivotal especially as the afternoon wore on," said Coach Brian Bowker.

In her first year of playing golf for Tattnall, Junior Julia Boland posted a score that was "middle of the pack" with girls from other schools who have been playing golf for years. Julia greatly improved as the season went on and put together a good round of golf today.

Junior Slaton Berkner's putter was working on the greens leading him to shoot 88 for the Trojans which included three birdies and a handful of pars. Freshman Ayden Dunn had five pars to finish the day with a 93. Junior Isaac Hayes matched Ayden's score with a 93 of his own. This was Isaac's best 18-hole performance since joining the Tattnall Varsity golf team his Freshman year. In their last tournament for the Trojans, Seniors Evan Daniell and Cohen Ingle combined for 8 pars and finished the day strong. The Varsity boys posted a team score of 360. This score was only seven shots from being included in a play-off for the third spot to go to State and was eight shots from taking solo second. The team score was a fifteen-shot improvement from last year's Area Tournament score.

Tattnall alum Andy Bacchus was a Senior when Tattnall won that championship in 2001. Andy's son, Drew Bacchus, is now part of the golf team that performed so well today. Drew was the top performer for the Trojans with an 86 on his card which included one birdie and a number of pars. On the freshman's play today, Coach Bowker added, "Drew demonstrated mental toughness, a must in golf, by bouncing back after a couple of disappointing holes. This led to him putting a great round of golf together on a course that was playing difficult for the entire field."

On the team's performance today, Coach Bowker had this to say:  "In past Area Tournaments, our players didn't feel the need to stay after finishing up their round because there wasn't much of a chance of making State. Today, that was not the case. As groups started to finish their rounds, there was a lot of anticipation about the possibility of making State. We were right there in the mix. We were competitive. A few shots here and there, and it would have been a different story. It's nice to walk away knowing that you had a chance. If you put yourself in that position enough it's bound to happen eventually. I am so proud of our team and the way they played today. Go Trojans!"

Bright days are ahead for Tattnall Golf.
